Celebrate Buy Nothing Day with us on November 29!

Join us for Sustainable Flatbush’s 3rd annual Buy Nothing Day potluck on November 29 2013!

Buy Nothing Day offers an alternative to the consumerist excess of Black Friday: a chance to unshop, unspend, and unwind. At Sustainable Flatbush we celebrate this special day not by hitting the shopping malls, but instead by hosting a potluck where friends and neighbors can get to know each other through sharing food and conversation. Buy Nothing Day is an opportunity to join fellow un-consumers to rethink our priorities and focus on creating a community – and society – that is more equitable and sustainable.

We didn’t make this up… it’s an international movement! Check out a portion of the manifesto:

Join millions of others on November 29 and see what it feels like to stop consuming for 24 hours. Go cold turkey from consumer culture completely! Like those who have accepted this magical invitation before you, you may be rewarded with a life-changing shift of perspective – a glimpse into how to consume less and live more on this precarious Planet of ours …

Our Buy Nothing Day tradition also includes a screening and discussion of one of our favorite films, The Story of Stuff:

The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

This film continues to provoke and inspire with repeated viewings, and for 2013 we will add to the fun by holding an interactive contest. Bring your best game to win a mystery prize!

Schedule of activities:

  • 5pm … Doors open. Stop by for any or all portion(s) of the evening
  • 5:30pm … The Story of Stuff screening and discussion with Popcorn, Margaritas and Prizes
  • 6:30pm … Potluck meal begins. We strongly encourage BYO dishes and utensils to reduce waste. Community discussion continues during the meal.
  • 8pm … End of event

Venue: The location is a private home (maximum capacity 40 guests), RSVP for the address and to sign up for a dish or drink to share. See you on the 29th!
